Attachment language is useful when it describes a *move in the room*: I pursue, I go quiet, I joke it off, I list the evidence. It becomes unhelpful the moment it becomes a tattoo on someone else's forehead. Styles are patterns under stress, not identities you owe an apology for.

This is not a test that assigns you a type. It is a way to notice the dance so you can change one step.

## Three common moves

Under threat of distance, people tend to:

- **Protest** — more texts, more questions, more heat. The body is trying to close the gap.
- **Withdraw** — fewer words, a busy calendar, a sudden need to "be rational." The body is trying to get safe.
- **Appease** — agree too fast, then resent it later. The body is trying to keep the connection at any price.

You can run all three in one week. The map is of the moment, not of your soul.

## Talk about the move, not the character

"You always abandon me" puts the other person on trial. "When the conversation went quiet I started stacking arguments" describes your side of the dance. Character attacks invite defense. Move-descriptions invite a next step.

A repair sentence that often works: "I got scared and I did X. What I need in the next ten minutes is Y." Y has to be doable: a pause, a walk, a time to return, a hand.

## Repair is a skill, not a mood

Repair is the moment after the spike when someone re-enters. It is often clumsy. It still counts. Waiting to feel perfectly calm first is how days of silence get built.

You will get this wrong. Consistency — coming back the same day more often than not — matters more than a perfect script.

## What this is not

It is not a claim that your relationship is doomed or destined. It is not therapy. Couples work with a licensed clinician when the pattern is stuck, unsafe, or old enough that you cannot see the room. Attachment research is a map. You still have to walk.

## Try this today

1. Name your last conflict as a move: protest, withdraw, or appease.
2. Write one sentence that describes *your* move without diagnosing theirs.
3. If it is safe to send, send a repair that asks for one concrete next step (time, pause, or return).
4. If it is not safe, do not send. Safety first. The practice can wait.
