Masking is the work of looking "fine" in rooms that punish difference: eye contact on a timer, jokes you do not mean, a body held still, a script for small talk. It can keep a job. It can also empty the tank by 6pm.

This is not a diagnosis of autism, ADHD, or anything else. Plenty of people mask for reasons that are not neurodivergence. The practice is about effort you can see, and one place you might spend less of it.

## Notice the bill

After a high-masking block, the bill often shows up as shutdown, irritation, or a need to go dark. That is not a moral failure. It is a closed tab.

A useful log, three lines: *Where was I. What was I performing. What did it cost after.* Do this for a week. Patterns beat vibes.

## Recovery is part of the job

If the day requires a mask, schedule recovery like a meeting: quiet, a stim that is yours, food, a walk without a podcast. Unscheduled recovery is how people "mysteriously" fall apart on Friday.

You will need trial and error to learn how long the recovery has to be. Start longer than you think. Shorten only when the data says you can.

## Retire one performance, not your whole life

Self-acceptance slogans skip the logistics. You cannot unmask everywhere. You can pick *one* low-stakes room — a friend, a hobby, a written channel — and drop one layer: the fake laugh, the forced eye contact, the apology for existing.

Safety first. Do not unmask in a room that will punish you. The practice is selective honesty, not a campaign.

## What this is not

It is not a claim that you are neurodivergent. It is not medical advice. Assessment and workplace accommodations belong with professionals and, where relevant, HR processes you actually trust. Masking research is a map of *effort*. You still choose where the effort goes.

## Try this today

1. After your next demanding interaction, write the three-line bill.
2. Put a recovery block on the calendar the same day — even twenty minutes.
3. Name one layer you could drop in a room that is already safe.
4. Drop it once. Note whether the tank lasted longer. Keep or revert based on that, not on a slogan.
